EPA honors Montville

LifeWise Community Press Releases: May 7, 2004
HAMPTON - Longtime Hampton Beach resident and community volunteer Bruce A. Montville EE was honored this week for his involvement in the "Future Water Guardians of New Hampshire," a safe drinking water program.

Montville, who has lived in Hampton since 1975, was honored Wednesday by the New England Environmental Protection Agency as recipient of New England’s 2004 Drinking Water Environmental Educator Award.

"It makes me very proud the Environmental Protection Agency is paying attention to our program," said Montville, who attended the award ceremony at the Littleton National Guard Armory.

Montville created the program that educates elementary and middle-school students about the importance of safe groundwater as part of LifeWise Community Projects Inc., an organization he founded in 1992 that provides a wide array of volunteer community services.

Last year, volunteers from LifeWise visited more than 30 schools and made more than 90 presentations concerning safe groundwater and the risk of pollution as growth escalates in communities.

"Safe drinking water and contamination is always an important issue to the community and by teaching students about it we’re making an impact," said Montville.

The well-received program began in 1999 and is being funded by the N.H. Department of Environmental Services and the N.H. Coastal Program.

"The demand for us to go to different schools far exceeds our ability to get out there," said Montville. "Since February, we have done 103 presentations. We’ve actually had to turn down schools because we didn’t have the time."

Montville said he was very surpirsed when he received a letter from the EPA about the award.

"I never knew they even had an award," Montville said.

Montville said each year the program expands. He added next year he wants to have more information about the importance of water conservation.

"Another thing that we haven’t gotten to but that we would like to implement is having a student legacy program," Montville said. "Two eighth-grade students would educate their peers about safe groundwater."
