Wildcat Youth Mentors Visit the Oyster River H.S.

DURHAM — Members of Wildcat Youth Mentors recently made their presence known at Oyster River High School. At the freshman orientation on August 26, close to 200 new students were told about the mentor program, its confidentiality, and how a mentor can help younger people cope with the many challenges they will face in and out of school.

The Wildcat Youth Mentors are composed entirely of University of New Hampshire students or alumni, bringing about a positive impact on the lives of youth in area schools served in Durham, Barrington, Dover and Newmarket.

The school-based program allows a teenager to be matched with a young adult already on a success track. They meet one hour per week for the entire academic year.

Sara Langley, a returning mentor, majoring in psychology, stated that, "Our mentors have already had great success with this program and we look forward to being of continued benefit to both middle and high school students, especially those that can use a boost and a friend during these important formative years."

The actual start of the Wildcat Youth Mentors 2006 program is the week of Oct. 16.
